SJ is a ceramic sculptor based in Atlanta, Georgia, who brings clay to life with whimsical, animal-inspired creations. Born in Micronesia and raised in the American South, SJ grew up exposed to taxidermy—a tradition they found more creepy than comforting. Now, SJ flips that childhood experience on its head by creating ethical taxidermy sculptures in clay, honoring animals with works that are playful, heartfelt, and anything but eerie.
Drawing inspiration from animals encountered during childhood and travels, SJ’s sculptures capture the spirit and personality of their subjects. By using minimal glazes, SJ highlights the raw beauty and texture of the clay. Each sculpture tells a story, inviting viewers into a world where the magic of memory and imagination meets the tactile nature of the medium.
Currently, SJ is exploring the exciting challenge of creating larger-scale works, expanding their practice while maintaining the intimate, narrative qualities that define their art.
Though SJ’s journey with ceramics began just two years ago, their work has already found its way into private collections and Mudfire Studio and Gallery. Based in Atlanta, SJ finds endless creative energy in the city’s artist community and in nature.
